If there's anyone particular opposition after the yanking off of colonialism and white supremacy in Africa, it's the opposition to gays in some major countries in Africa inter alia Ghana, Nigeria and Malawi etc. Though South Africa, one of the giants in the continent has okayed the practice within its jurisdiction, the fiercest opposition by Ghana and Nigeria tells us that the battle is far off from being over.
Philip Amponsah, a Ghanaian who supports gays braces up with rejection as his father threatened to disown him after discovering that his son is a gay. Mr. Amponsah upon discovering this sexual orientation of his son set fire on his belongings such as sleeping mattress and clothes\ in February 2014. He ended his action with a caution of disowning him if he doesn't behave well as well as reporting him to the police to face punitive measures.
Philip who's known as Paddai in the community has become a laughing stock and had to hide before walking home. He has faced many threats on his life including lynching by some people in the community due to his sexual orientation. He went to hiding and nobody has any idea of his whereabouts.
"They (gays) should leave our society for us. We don't like them", said Sonnia Yankson - a female Anti-gay campaigner in the society.
What's your sexual orientation? And in which country do you find yourself?
In Liberia too, some of the citizens have been campaigning against Robert Sirleaf, the son of President Ellen Johnson for initiating some young men into the gay society and promising them heaven in Liberia. One such guy who play for his team has left home because of rejection and threat on his life.
If you are gay then, Ghana, Nigeria and Malawi etc are definitely not your home.
