It is against this backdrop that, Ghanaians rallied as never before in opposition to the alleged attempt by the Homosexuals and the Lesbians to hold their maiden meeting in this country.
One clear testament of Ghana’s moral uprightness is seen in the way the various churches are steering the wheels of administration of the various mission schools in the country. Mention could be made of Presbyterian schools, Methodist schools, Pentecostal schools and the like. These churches, against highhanded governmental bottlenecks have survived to live up to expectation and individual creeds.
However, the recent proliferation of pornographic videos on our various tertiary schools leaves room for a lot of worry. In the year 2007 there were a lot of ‘nude’ videos coming from the premier university in the country; the University of Ghana, Legon and this went unnoticed and unchided by the Ghanaian populace whose tax is used to subsidize the fees for the students.
The year 2010 has witnessed an influx of pornographic videos approximately from all the major tertiary schools namely, University of Ghana, Legon (about four cases), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University for Development Studies etc. There is also a video of a 19 years old Ghanaian born Ivy who was sexually maltreated by some “porn promoters” in the US, simply because she kicked herself in to be a “porn Star”, because of “money”.
If the best and brightest refuse to respect any objective standards of morality, then our nation will decline as rapidly as has Washington DC.
In the midst of all this gloomy images, it is important we interrogate the university officials who have failed in their attempt to instill discipline and incite appropriate behavior in the much touted “future leaders of this country”. The authorities especially of University of Ghana, Legon have saddled themselves with the suppression of right of students to speak against despicable policies of the authorities.
The Dean of Students, Prof. Banoeng Yakubu is oft mentioned as the “Legon Stalin” with authoritarian and autocratic tendencies towards students.
If Ghana can out do the degeneration that is fast closing in on our society, the university officials must truncate the kind of ‘fooling’ that they perpetuate and concentrate on creating a “first class disciplined human resource material for a smooth developmental take off” for Ghana – a less developing country (LDC).
Any student found whatsoever engaging in this kind of act must be chided, scolded, suspended, and if possible rusticated to serve as a deterrent to the others. If we cannot maintain moral sanity while at school how can we manage it at work with the way our ‘bosses’ have sexually been harassing our children, sisters, girlfriends, wives and mothers?
This is a wake up call for the President of the Republic – Atta-Mills, the Minister of Education – Alex Tetey Enyo, Vice Chancellor Ghana (VCG), Civil society organizations, National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), University Students Association of Ghana (USAG), Regional Students’ Representative Councils (RSRC’s), all tertiary SRC’s and the entire student in the country to stand up to the call and fight the all pervasive canker that wield the power to erode our democratic strides in a split second.
Ghana wahala, indeed.

I was born in Ghana but I've been living in the U.S. for the past ten years. I just finished my freshman year at Yale. Ever since my arrival in the States, watching Ghana and Nigeria movies have been something my family and i have done to not only entertain ourselves but to remain in touch with Ghanaian humour and to feel like there is a piece of home here in the States. But lately, the kind of movies that have been coming out of Ghana have been nothing less than appalling. I don't understand what happened in Ghana to spark this new genre of movies but it's ridiculous. It's embarrasing when my American and African friends come to me and ask me, "Hey, what's up with Ghana?" This is not the kind of reputation we have in the world and it is frankly very emabarassing.
One thing that I have noticed about Ghanaians is that we tend to overlearn things and ignorantly push boundaries. I don't know if the movie producers are trying to emulate American movies, but thats simply not how it's done here. I beg that we stick to what we know and do what we do best because most of these sex scenes end up being awkwardly shot and its just uncomfortable for all parties viewing it.
Better be envied than pitied.
