AASU - Governments Must be Committed to Security and Safety of Our Workers

Press Statement

                                                                             May Day Celebrations

This day, we the leaders and people of the All-Africa Students Union (AASU) celebrate the hardwork of the continent’s workers. Though our men and women who work in our factories, farms and manufacturing companies are not visible for recognition in our media however, they are mighty in courage. And in Ghana, for the past few months, some of the labor unions have demonstrated through mass actions such as strikes the timeless pointer that, “workers cannot be pushed around” by unfulfilled promises of political leaders.  As the country and the continent mark Workers Day today, the leadership of the All-Africa Students Union (AASU) wants to say a heartfelt congratulation to the men and women who with their tired feet administer the machines of our many factories and implement the policies of our offices including the ministries for the overall development of the country and continent we love. We say Ayekoo to you all.

However, AASU wants to bring up to the attention of our individual National Governments that the security and safety of our men and women who tend our many factories/manufacturing companies including the farmers must be our priority if we aim at maximizing the collective gain that comes from their efforts. Protection of the workers from exploitation (unfair wages, working under dangerous environments etc) and discrimination (tribe, religion, race, HIV Aids, etc) in the hands of factory owners including Governments should be abhorred in its rawest form. By their daily waking and commuting to work, our men and women tell us that there’s always something we can do to move our individual countries and continent towards the Promised Land.  From Tema to Accra right through Cape Coast into Tarkwa and from Tamale to Sunyani right through Kumasi into Koforidua, the workers all across remind us that change happens not mainly through the exploits of the powerful or the famous in our society but also through many countless acts often not appreciated and recognized but quintessential for the development of our individual nations.

AASU believes that, it is some of this spirit that is making economic growth and human progress possible in a continent said to be underdeveloped. We also want to appeal to our national Governments to help broaden what the youth in the continent yearn for – education, job creation, and entrepreneurship which will expand the prosperity net of the continent and enhance our democracy with greater security.
Signed
