From the very day Mills took over the rein of government from the Kuffour-led-NPP-administration that nearly drown the whole country into the abyss of hunger, mischief, deceit, lies, real poverty and guinea worm infested rivers, streams and lakes which serves as drinking water for our village folks, the NPP functionaries have always faulted Mills for insignificant things just because they are so soon thirsty for power. They are simply power drunks.
From the font size of his speeches to an unsubstantiated comment from an NPP stalwart, Mr. Kwame Mpiani (economist) that he has witnessed President Mills rejecting three envelops with who knows -whooping dollars or cedis.
As a country from -to borrow the diction of the West ‘dark continent’ we have had our fare share of despotic and corrupt leaders but we cannot claim monopoly as a continent of bad leaders. Mention could be made of Eyadema of Togo, Omar Bongo of Gabon, and Abacha of Nigeria among others.
However, Africa seems to understand the rhythm of ‘democracy’ and embracing so fast and hook line and sinker the tenets of democracy. Botswana, Ghana, and South Africa are few waking giants who have blazed the trail for other well meaning countries to follow.
Nonetheless, poverty and the poor remains largely the ‘difficult’ puzzle that has almost always confounded our politicians who chanted ‘care, love, prosperity, austerity, transparency, accountability and brotherliness’ when they had their humble tunic on during campaign seasons.
In all things Mills has graded himself 8/10 to him for a good work done. My foot!
What did he do? Is it getting the BNI to act phony in the eyes of the world and inviting insults and condemnation from his ‘masters’? Is it freezing employment avenues in our public places or sacking newly recruited Ghanaian army men and women? Or for may be rejecting the alleged fat ‘brown envelopes’? Or for sending Kwesi Pratt to South Africa to join the government delegation to witness the World Cup 2010 draws? Or may be for his slow pace and hardship-oriented government?
People are suffering more than before. Today, the one uniform given to our brothers and sisters for their years in school by the government is simply disgusting and disheartening to even imagine. Just a uniform for classes one, two, three and still counting.
Aside ordinary Ghanaians voicing their impatient on Mills for his lag attitude the president has also had to fight off ‘insurrections’ in his own National Democratic Congress (NDC) party. Stalwarts like the founder and life patron Flt. Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, Michael Teye an MP and Dr. Ekow Spio Gabrah the CEO of Commonwealth Telecommunications are the lead critic of the snail pace Mills-led-NDC-administration.
If Mills want to regain the confidence of the people that the NPP were swift to throw away it will largely depend on the rest of his three years making a term and not only 2009 of slow government.
His New Year address was inspiring and encouraging but Mills must know that the difference between he and his men and we the ordinary Ghanaians is that, we all know the solutions to our ailment but they have the opportunity to solve it so he should stop failing us woefully like his predecessors.
Most of our political leaders have been nothing short of disappointment and so if Mills wants to join the bandwagon he should continue to be slow and Ghanaians will show his party the swift exit comes 2012.
