We Need to Dissolve the Ghana Blackstar Team and Rebuild it

The return of the Ghana Blackstar team after their poor showing at the Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup has brought many revelations to public especially what really took place in the team’s camp. The alleged misconduct of senior players such as Kelvin Prince Boateng, Sulley Muntari and Michael Essien towards the Coach Kwesi Appiah and Elvis Afriyie Ankrah (former Minister of Youth and Sports) is proven to be false. The issue of the over $3 million sent to the players in Brazil and the poor showing of the team in the tournament have caused the team to lose the support of Ghanaians.

The disappointment of Ghanaians is not in the team’s performance but rather their exhibition of lack of respect for the RED, GOLD, GREEN and BLACK flag which elicited many reactions from the fans. “Our tax cannot fund miscreants” says one fan of the team. “Ghana deserves some respect from the Blackstar”, says another. Another too, “Ghanaians should withdraw their support from the team”. These and many more came out in expression of disappointment at the team’s poor performance.
There were others too who called for the head of the Minister of Youth and Sports, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah and the Coach Kwesi Appiah for his gross disrespect of the President and good people of Ghana.

Today, Ghanaians are not interested in whatever happens to the team anymore. In their recent CAF qualifiers with Uganda, the Blackstar drew a one all. Ghanaian fans hooted at the players anytime they took the ball. The day was so bad that, an hour to the game, Asamoah Gyan, left camp to the Police station to bail his careless brother Baffour Gyan who was put behind bars for assaulting Daniel Kenu (Ashanti Regional Correspondent of Daily Graphic) when the reporter asked his brother of the where about of Castro De Destroyer (the musician alleged to have drawn in the Ada waters). Baffour Gyan led a team of bodily built men to beat the reporter to the point of death.

However, in all these noise, Ghanaians need to understand the truth that, the footballers are not the Blackstar but we’re. We’ve been the shining example throughout ages in areas of medicine, politics, democracy, unity and national cohesion. Ghana has been exemplary in the continent. The beliefs of Nkrumah and the other compatriots who put their life on the line when duty called gave the BLACKSTAR hope. They gave us HOPE. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, J. B Danquah and Paa Willie all contributed to giving Ghanaians and Africa HOPE. It’s that hope watered by the occasional blood of martyrs.

We cannot continue to taunt, scold, and boo the men on the field for their lack of patriotism at the world stage however disappointing we felt. Blackstar is for Ghana and not for any ungrateful miscreants who feel the tax payer owes him a fortune. If the players cannot deliver, it’s about time we dissolve the team and re-build it. Our hard won reputation as the BLACKSTAR of the world cannot be unrolled by the behavior of some men and women. Let’s save our national pride from slipping by. We’re the BLACKSTAR. Yes you - the one putting in an effort however small to distinguish yourself in your chosen career field.
