RESOLVING THE AASU CRISIS

RESOLVING THE AASU CRISIS

Dear Sir,

PETITION FOR THE SANITIZATION OF THE ALL-AFRICA-STUDENT-UNION CRISIS
I extend my felicitations to you, mindful that you are placed at the highest echelon of our dear union and entrusted with the destiny of Ghanaian students to pursue their supreme interest.

It is in my absolute believe in your integrity and competence that  I bring before  you for the deliberation and subsequent action of the National Secretariat, a major issue which will invariably be the “achilles heel” within the body politic of A.A.S.U and N.U.G.S.

Foremost, it is worth establishing that the National Union of Ghana Students is guided and guarded jealously by a consecrated constitution as adopted and promulgated at UCC in the year 2007.

I further remind the secretariat that AASU is run by conventions, protocols, administrative consensus and a structured constitution of which NUGS must as a subservient entity conform to.

Sir, the trajectory of the impasse in AASU reveals enormously that AASU’s emancipation has been short -circuited as a result of constitutional decadence and the wanton pursuit of parochial quest of some individuals at the expense of both NUGS and AASU.

I wish to remind you strongly that it is the National Student Unions’ that contest specific offices in AASU and not individuals.

Mr. President, as a matter of constitutionalism the individual elected by Congress to represent NUGS at the AASU Secretariat automatically ascends to the portfolio annexed by NUGS during the AASU Congress.

I wish to remind your Secretariat that NUGS has not decided on which specific office to contest for in AASU and the modalities to regulate its campaign.

And that as of now, the position of NUGS’s representative on AASU, who is automatically the deputy secretary-general is vacant, referencing the declaration by the ministry of Foreign Affairs to that effect.

I further submit that none of the purported occupants of the AASU seat on the ticket of both sides of NUGS divide can contest again because they cannot exceed the maximum term of office as provided by the AASU and NUGS constitutions, assuming without admitting that their claim have merit.

I also wish to respectfully ask that you avert your mind to the fact that it is non-negotiable for NUGS to open nominations for individuals to contest for NUGS’s place in the AASU Secretariat at its impending Annual Residential Congress in line with its constitutional provisions.

In view of the above, I reckon that the National Union of Ghana Students cannot prematurely host the AASU congress before its own Annual Residential Congress especially because of this teeming stalemate.

I inform you nobly that, the backdoor approach and the clandestine attempt to shortchange NUGS in the processes leading to the AASU congress is not only detrimental but also a huge set-back in the NUGS healing process.

NUGS has an enormous responsibility to demand accountability in the organization of the AASU congress and ensure the safety of the Student leaders to be hosted during AASU congress.

NUGS must religiously persevere to deliberate on these truths as a matter of pressing urgency. I am minded by the absolute fact that the truth stands even in the minority of one.

In the cause of the public students’ interest, I suggest that the National Secretariat act on these stated irrefutable claims and fashion- out appropriate steps to remedy the situation.

I count on your fail-safe consideration for the truth, confident in the fact that the truth always prevails over falsehood at the long run.

This is the National Union of Ghana Students.

Signed:
Yours-In-The-Worthwhile-Students-Struggle!
