FOR IIMMEDIIATE RELEASE
STATEMENT OF THE NATIONAL UNION OF GHANA STUDENTS (NUGS)
ON WEDNESDAY, 5TH OCTOBER, 2011 –INTERNATIONAL TEACHER’S DAY
OUR TEACHERS’’:: THE BUIILDERS OF OUR NATIION
There is no denying the fact that our nation Ghana has benefited tremendously from
the innumerous and invaluable services provided by our men and women in our
classrooms. These gallant men and women have worked out their heart to nurture
and weave in students’ good qualities that are invaluable to the forward march of
Ghana.
In spite of the dangerous conditions some of our teachers had to work in, they still
discharge their responsibilities to the maximum. There are some teachers who will
have to teach pupils under trees and there are others still who suffered lashes at the
hands of some traditional leaders.
In the face of the above, the National Union of Ghana Students’ (NUGS) believes
these hazardous conditions are not right and must be weeded out of the way of our
teachers.
In South Korea, teachers are known as “NATION BUILDERS”; the story, however, in
our part of the world is totally different.
The National Union of Ghana Students’ (NUGS) believes it is about time we began
appreciating the efforts of the men and women who stand in front of pupils and
students in our classrooms here in Ghana. Much can be done by our Government to
elevate them from the horrors and the hazards that comes with their occupation.
With today, Wednesday, 5 October, 2011 marking the INTERNATIONAL TEACHER’S
DAY, we the leadership and members of the National Union of Ghana Students’
(NUGS) salutes the gallant men and women without whose effort our nation would
lack qualified and skilled human resources to man its institutions, factories, hospitals
and shops.
We would like to use this day to appeal to government and Civil Societies in Ghana to
help create a better condition for our teacher’s to operate by;
(1) Providing teachers with decent accommodations and a better pay-worth for their
services throughout the country.
(2) Recognizing and respecting the voice of teachers and their associations such as
GNAT, NAGRAT, and UTAG with regards to the formulation of policies within their
remit and beyond. This we believe will help in bolstering their commitment to the
country.
(3) Stepping up the way teachers are honored for their services rendered to the nation
by our national leadership. This NUGS believes would serve as an incentive to their
colleagues as well as attract the youth into the noble profession.
(4) Providing teachers the opportunity to benefit from cross-cultural research
conducted on the educational sector. This could best be achieved by organizing
workshop for teachers where they are taught strategies employed by other teachers in
different parts of the world which makes them competitive in the 21st Century world.
When the above among other equally significant steps that wield the potency for
transforming the lives of our teachers are implemented, NUGS is confident our nation
would be frog leaped to a different level in terms of development.
On behalf of Ghanaian students’ both in and outside the country, we the leadership of
the National Union of Ghana Students’ (NUGS) would like to thank our teachers for
the services they have rendered and continue to render to us.
We are better but for their services to US.
We say AYEKOO to our invaluable TEACHERS on this day and THANK YOU.
